Garden Route Food Pantry gets a lifeline
Update
GEORGE NEWS – There is some light in the tunnel for the Garden Route Food Pantry. The George Herald reported last week that unless the Garden Route Food Pantry gets support in the next two months it might have to close permanently.
The organisation made pleas for help. Carl van Blerk, managing director of the Garden Route Food Pantry, on Monday said that there were people and organisations that came forward and are prepared to help. He is hopeful.
He said a substantial donation was received from dr. Willie Cilliers, owner of Cilliers Accounting and Upstairs at Harrys, which will keep the doors open for a few more months.
“At a time when we were facing our last few days, the kindness and generosity of George once again became apparent,” said Van Blerk.
“We now need to keep the momentum going, as we don’t want to be facing the same predicament in the next 3 months’ time. With that in mind, we continue to ask residents to join the Friends of the Food Pantry initiative and commit to donating just R100 a month for 12 months.
“With 500 Friends, we will rarely have to ask for funding again, and can focus on our core mission to feed the starving.”
Van Blerk also confirmed that two people joined the Friends initiative last week, following marketing on Social Media, the George Herald and also on AlgoaFM news. He urged the community to take the few minutes to sign up on the following link: www.echo.org.za

” We as the community must take hands to help keep there doors open.”
Besides the food that companies and organisations donate there are also running costs for example rent of a building. That is one the reasons that he as a businessperson decided to help.
He said companies could get tax benefits if they make donations.
According to Van Blerk once off donations are humbly accepted as well: Eden Community Hope Outreach NPC; Standard Bank; George 051001; Acc: 10 13 129 7943 For Section 18A certificates, issued for both financial donations and for food stock donations.
